Situation: One of the more popular military units to this day is Pappy Boyington’s VMF-214 Black Sheep. VMF-214s three combat tours beginning in late 1943 yielded a total of 153 aerial victories and more than another 100 Japanese aircraft destroyed on the ground. A frequent target for the Black Sheep was the Japanese stronghold on Rabaul.
